The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Mary Pickford Foundation will continue their annual celebration of silent film with the restoration world premiere of “Little Annie Rooney” (1925) on Monday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bing Theater on the LACMA campus.

The screening is presented in conjunction with the Academy’s current exhibition Hollywood Costume, which features the costume that Mary Pickford wore in the title role.

On November 3 only, “Little Annie Rooney” ticket holders will receive free admission to Hollywood Costume during special viewing hours before the screening, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Film historian Jeffrey Vance, author of books on Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, will introduce the film and discuss Pickford’s legacy as a trailblazing actress, writer, producer and preservation advocate. Academy Film Archive Director Michael Pogorzelski will discuss the film’s restoration.

This new restoration of “Little Annie Rooney” was sourced from a 35mm tinted nitrate print loaned to the Academy Film Archive by the Library of Congress and contains some longer scenes, different camera set-ups, and multiple visual effects not seen in the previously available black and white version.

1925, 94 minutes, black and white, 35mm | Directed by William Beaudine; adaptation by Hope Loring and Louis D. Lighton, story by Catherine Hennessey [Mary Pickford], titles by Tom McNamara; with Mary Pickford, William Haines, Walter James, Gordon Griffith, Carlo Schipa, Spec O’Donnell

The Academy and the Mary Pickford Foundation in 2012 embarked on a multiyear partnership to promote the legacy of Mary Pickford and the silent film era. The partnership includes an annual silent film screening, silent film preservation initiatives and the digitization of components of the Academy’s Mary Pickford Collection.

The Mary Pickford Foundation is a Founding Supporter of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
