BAFTA, an arts charity and global academy of professionals spanning film, games, and television, has published its annual membership update detailing the make-up of its 14,000-strong international membership. The organization, which identifies and celebrates excellence while nurturing new screen talent, reported meeting or exceeding several key diversity targets that were initially set in 2020. These targets were established with the double aim of ensuring that the membership is diverse and representative of society, while also highlighting areas of under-representation within the screen industries.
As of 2025, BAFTA has successfully reached its targets for several groups. The membership achieved 19.85% representation for minority ethnic groups, nearing the 20% target. BAFTA surpassed its goals for Deaf, Disabled & Neurodivergent members, reaching 12.84% against a 12% target. Similarly, the organization exceeded its target for LGB+ members, achieving 13.29% against a 10% target.
While the target for women is 50%, 43% of current BAFTA members identify as women, though 51% of new members joining since 2020 identify in this group. Although a socio-economic background target was not set in 2020, current reporting shows that 19% of members are from working class backgrounds. This focus on membership diversity informs BAFTA’s year-round talent development programmes, which aim to provide access to professional networks and knowledge for talented individuals from under-represented groups.
BAFTA is recommitting to continue monitoring and publishing the diversity of its global membership annually, aiming to stay ahead of general population diversity targets based on the Census 2021 from 2026 onwards. Looking toward 2030, BAFTA plans to increase its target for Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent members to 18%. The charity will also continue its efforts to promote careers to those from working class backgrounds, setting a target of 25% new members from low socio-economic backgrounds by 2030. Furthermore, BAFTA is dedicated to striving for gender parity, particularly by increasing the representation of women in the games sector and in craft roles.
Leading the organization’s push for change, Sara Putt, Chair of BAFTA, said: “Talent exists in every community, and our industry thrives when we create pathways that allow all the stories and perspectives that shape our culture to be seen and celebrated.”
The commitment to inclusion was echoed by Andrew Miller MBE, BAFTA Board Trustee and Disability Advisory Group member, who said: “So I am immensely proud of BAFTA’s determination to shift the dial around disability.”
Overall, 10,000 BAFTA members vote in the annual BAFTA Awards, which celebrates creative talent from the worlds of film, games, and TV. Notably, BAFTA’s Games membership saw the largest year-over-year increase, growing by 27% with over 350 new Games members joining in 2025. BAFTA will be open to applications for membership in February 2026.
