LOS GATOS, Calif. — On March 5, 2026, Netflix announced its acquisition of InterPositive, a filmmaking technology company founded by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ben Affleck. The move signals a major investment in AI-powered tools designed to serve the creative process rather than replace it.

As part of the acquisition, the entire InterPositive team will integrate into Netflix, with Affleck joining as a Senior Advisor. The company’s mission focuses on using emerging technology to protect and expand creative choice, a philosophy that Elizabeth Stone, Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer, says is “purpose-built for filmmakers and showrunners” to support their unique visions.

A New Approach to AI in Cinema

Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022 after observing that early AI models often failed to account for the specific nuances of professional production. “For artists to apply these tools… they need to be purpose-built to represent and protect all the qualities that make a great story,” Affleck stated, citing challenges like light shape-shifting across a scene or visual editorial consistency.

Unlike broad AI models, InterPositive’s technology was developed using proprietary datasets filmed on controlled soundstages. This research led to a model trained to understand visual logic and cinematic rules, ensuring that the technology addresses technical hurdles like missing shots or background replacements while keeping creative decisions firmly in the hands of the artists.

Empowering the Creative Community

Netflix leadership emphasized that this partnership is grounded in creator trust. Bela Bajaria, Netflix Chief Content Officer, noted that InterPositive follows a long industry tradition of artists leading innovation. “Their work is about giving filmmakers more choices, more control and more protection for their vision,” Bajaria said.

The acquisition also ensures that human judgment remains the centerpiece of the filmmaking process. The tools developed by InterPositive focus on filmmaking techniques rather than performances, creating a workflow that uses the existing language of directors and cinematographers.

Strategic Context

This acquisition comes during a period of significant growth for Netflix. The company has recently made headlines with its massive $82.7 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which is expected to close following a special meeting on March 20, 2026. By bringing Affleck’s team on board, Netflix continues to pair technology with artistry to help global stories find their audience.

Affleck expressed his excitement for the future of the partnership, stating he looks forward to providing the “broader creative community with access to what we build” as they work toward a future where human creativity remains the core of storytelling.
