LOS ANGELES — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG have announced a landmark multi-year partnership that will move the Oscars to a new home at L.A. LIVE beginning in 2029. The agreement establishes a 10-year residency through 2039, starting with the 101st Oscars ceremony.
The ceremony will be held at the venue currently known as the Peacock Theater, a 7,100-seat live theater located within the 23-acre sports and entertainment district in downtown Los Angeles. As part of the partnership, AEG will undertake comprehensive enhancements to the theater, including significant upgrades to its stage, sound and lighting systems, lobbies, and backstage facilities to accommodate the specific production needs of the Oscars.
In a significant shift for the broadcast, the 2029 ceremony will also be the first to host the Oscars on YouTube through an exclusive global rights deal with the Academy. The event’s famous red carpet arrivals and associated activities will take place in L.A. LIVE’s recently expanded plaza.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor expressed enthusiasm for the move, highlighting AEG’s “unrivaled” track record for operating technologically sophisticated venues. Todd Goldstein, Chief Revenue Officer of AEG, stated that the collaboration will “reimagine what the Oscars can look and feel like” while delivering an unforgettable experience for movie fans worldwide.
Fans of the current format still have several years at the traditional venue, as the Oscars will continue to be held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and televised on ABC through the 100th Oscars in 2028.
L.A. LIVE, which opened its first phase in 2007, is already a hub for major entertainment and sports, housing the Crypto.com Arena, the GRAMMY Museum, and two major hotels. The district is considered the nation’s most active live event campus, hosting more award shows and high-profile competitions than any other destination globally.
