HYDERABAD – Director SS Rajamouli, the visionary behind global hits like RRR and the Baahubali franchise, has officially set a date for his next magnum opus. His upcoming film, titled Varanasi, is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on April 7, 2027, coinciding with the Telugu New Year, Ugadi.
The film marks the highly anticipated maiden collaboration between Rajamouli and superstar Mahesh Babu. Joining the high-profile cast are global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas and acclaimed actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. Produced by SS Durga Arts and Showing Business, the project is already being hailed as one of the director’s most ambitious ventures yet.
A Fusion of Mythology and Sci-Fi
Billed as a “globetrotter,” Varanasi is expected to bridge the gap between ancient Indian mythology and cosmic sci-fi. The makers recently unveiled a new poster to confirm the release date, which features a meteor slamming into Earth, hinting at a high-stakes, apocalyptic storyline.
Fans received their first look at the film’s unique aesthetic in November 2025, during a glimpse that showcased Mahesh Babu as a blood-streaked warrior wielding a trident. In a striking blend of traditional and futuristic elements, his character was also seen riding a mechanical white bull. Rajamouli introduced the project to thousands of fans at a colossal event held at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, emphasizing the “mythic cosmic” scale of the narrative.

The film’s technical crew includes long-time Rajamouli collaborator and Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, who will provide the musical score. Categorized as an action-adventure and mythological sci-fi epic, the production aims to deliver a pan-Indian cinematic event that resonates on a global scale.
