LOS ANGELES, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and YouTube have signed a multi-year deal granting YouTube exclusive global rights to the Oscars ceremony and other Academy content, starting in 2029. The landmark partnership begins with the 101st Oscars ceremony and is set to run through 2033.

This collaboration is designed to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest possible worldwide audience. The Oscars ceremony, which includes red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes access, and the Governors Ball, will be available live and for free to over 2 billion viewers around the world on YouTube. In the United States, the content will also be available to YouTube TV subscribers. YouTube is expected to enhance accessibility by providing features such as closed captioning and audio tracks in multiple languages.

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor highlighted that the Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will leverage YouTube’s vast reach. They stated that the collaboration will infuse the Oscars and other programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring the organization’s legacy. Ultimately, this access will allow the Academy to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers, and provide access to its film history on an “unprecedented global scale”.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan reinforced the importance of the deal, noting that the Oscars are “one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry”. He added that partnering with the Academy will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers.

Year-Round Content and Museum Access

The partnership extends well beyond the annual awards broadcast, providing worldwide access to a range of other Academy events and programs exclusively on the Oscars YouTube channel. This year-round content will include the Governors Awards, the Oscars Nominations Announcement, the Oscars Nominees Luncheon, the Student Academy Awards, and the Scientific and Technical Awards. Additionally, fans will gain access to Academy member and filmmaker interviews, film education programs, and podcasts.

As part of this holistic partnership, the Google Arts & Culture initiative will aid in providing digital access to select Academy Museum exhibitions and programs. This initiative will also help to digitize components of the Academy Collection—the largest film-related collection in the world, containing more than 52 million items. The comprehensive effort is intended to create a true hub for film fans, accessible globally.

The Academy, which is the world’s premier film organization, currently holds a global membership of more than 11,000 film industry artists and leaders.

It is noted that the Academy’s current domestic partnership for the Oscars will continue with Disney ABC through the 100th Oscars in 2028, as will the international partnership with Disney’s Buena Vista International.
