BBC Announces Search for Next Generation of Comedy Stars as 2026 Collective Applications Open

LONDON – The BBC has officially announced that applications for the 2026 BBC Comedy Collective will open on Wednesday, April 8, marking the fourth year of the initiative designed to accelerate the careers of mid-level comedy talent.
The supercharged bursary scheme offers 10 coveted spots to a mix of writers, performers, producers, directors, and editors looking to advance their careers in scripted comedy. To ensure representation across the UK, the BBC has guaranteed that at least one place will be awarded to an individual from Liverpool (the host city for the 2026 BBC Comedy Festival), as well as one each from Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland.
A Boost for Professional Creators
Unlike entry-level programs, the Collective is specifically tailored for those who already have at least one professional credit in any genre across platforms such as TV, radio, theatre, podcasts, or stand-up. For editors, the scheme targets Edit Assistants and Assistant Editors who are seeking to break into narrative scripted comedy.

“The BBC Comedy Collective is a fantastic way for emerging comedy talent… to get stuck into the heart of the industry,” said Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC. “It’s about opening doors and helping the next wave of voices find their place in the comedy community”.
Significant Financial and Mentorship Support
Each successful applicant will receive a comprehensive support package valued at over £15,000, including:
- Up to £10,000 in paid shadowing on a BBC Comedy production.
- A £5,000 development grant to further their individual career goals.
- An allocated production mentor and a dedicated point of contact within the BBC Comedy Commissioning team.
- Access to industry ambassadors, including director Christine Gernon, editor Gareth Heal, and producer Ash Atalla.
The scheme also provides full travel and accommodation expenses for delegates to attend a minimum of three industry events, including the BBC Comedy Festival.
Legacy and Industry Backing
The Collective honors the legacy of comedy greats, with estate representatives for Felix Dexter, Caroline Aherne, and the writing duo Galton and Simpson serving as ambassadors. The program is supported by major industry players, including BBC Studios, Hat Trick, Big Talk, and Merman, as well as various post-production houses and screen agencies across the UK.
Previous participants have seen significant success, going on to create BAFTA-winning series, secure script commissions, and land major directing credits.
How to Apply
Applications will remain open until Wednesday, May 6. The final 2026 cohort will be officially announced during the Edinburgh TV Festival in August 2026.
