Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have officially unveiled the first teaser trailer for Digger, a high-stakes collaboration between action icon Tom Cruise and Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu. Billed as a “comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the film is slated for a theatrical and IMAX release on October 2, 2026.
A Darkly Comic Apocalypse
The film represents a significant tonal shift for both its lead and director. For Cruise, Digger marks his first major venture into the comedy genre since 2010’s Knight and Day. For Iñárritu, it is his first English-language project since his 2015 hit The Revenant.
The plot centers on Digger Rockwell (Cruise), described as the “most powerful man in the world”. In a blend of biting satire and dark humor, Rockwell embarks on a frantic mission to prove himself as humanity’s savior before a catastrophic disaster he personally unleashed destroys the planet.

An Ensemble of Heavyweights
Beyond Cruise, the production features an impressive ensemble cast of award-winning talent, including:
- Jesse Plemons
- Sandra Hüller
- Riz Ahmed
- John Goodman
- Michael Stuhlbarg
- Sophie Wilde
- Emma D’Arcy
Grand Visual Scale
To capture the film’s “visually grand” and apocalyptic scope, Iñárritu reunited with renowned cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. The movie was shot over six months in the United Kingdom, utilizing 35mm film and VistaVision to ensure a premium cinematic experience.
Filming originally began on November 7, 2024, and wrapped on May 3, 2025. While production saw a brief pause in March 2025 due to a minor hip injury sustained by John Goodman, the project remained on track for its October 2026 debut.
Think of Digger as a world-class chef accidentally setting fire to the kitchen, then frantically trying to cook a five-star meal amidst the flames to prove he’s still the best in the business. It’s a high-stakes disaster managed with the absurdity of someone more worried about their reputation than the smoke.
