Panem Revisits the Past: “Sunrise on the Reaping” Details Haymitch Abernathy’s Brutal Victory in 50th Hunger Games

The world of Panem is expanding once again with the release of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, a prequel set 24 years before the events of the original trilogy. The story, which debuted as an instant #1 bestselling novel on March 18, 2025, chronicles the harrowing journey of a young Haymitch Abernathy during the Second Quarter Quell.
The narrative begins on the morning of Haymitch’s 16th birthday, coinciding with the reaping for a special edition of the Games that required each district to send double the number of tributes—four instead of the usual two—resulting in a total of 48 competitors. Haymitch was not the initial choice for the Games; he entered as a replacement or volunteer after another District 12 boy, Woodbine Chance, was killed attempting to escape. He was reaped alongside Maysilee Donner, the original owner of the iconic mockingjay pin, as well as Wyatt Callow and Louella McCoy.

Haymitch secured his victory by discovering and exploiting a flaw in the arena’s invisible forcefield at a cliff’s edge. In the final showdown, the last remaining tribute, Silka Sharp, threw an axe at Haymitch; the weapon rebounded off the forcefield and struck her instead, making Haymitch the victor.
However, the victory was met with a tragic aftermath. In retaliation for Haymitch’s clever manipulation of the arena’s boundaries, President Snow orchestrated the deaths of Haymitch’s mother and brother in a fire. Additionally, his girlfriend, Lenore Dove, died in his arms after consuming poisoned gumdrops planted by the Capitol.
Author Suzanne Collins was reportedly inspired by the 18th-century philosopher David Hume, focusing on themes of propaganda, narrative control, and the “implicit submission” of the many to the few. Fans can look forward to a feature film adaptation directed by Francis Lawrence, which wrapped principal photography in Berlin in November 2025 and is scheduled for a theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
