The BBC has officially commenced production on two significant television projects: the 16th series of the long-running hit Death in Paradise and the new thriller Wahala. Both productions are designated for BBC One and iPlayer, reinforcing the broadcaster’s commitment to high-budget drama for domestic and international audiences.
Death in Paradise Enters its 16th Series
Filming for the next chapters of the award-winning drama Death in Paradise has begun on location in Guadeloupe, the Caribbean setting that represents the fictional island of Saint Marie. The BBC has confirmed the recommissioning of two additional series and two Christmas specials, ensuring the show’s presence on the schedule through at least Series 17. Don Gilet returns as DI Mervin Wilson, leading a cast that includes Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, Shantol Jackson as DS Naomi Thomas, and Elizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bordey.
The production is managed by Red Planet Pictures, with Tim Key serving as Executive Producer alongside America Rodriguez and Nick Lambon. Key has teased “something very special” and a “big surprise” for the upcoming Christmas special. Now reaching 230 territories worldwide, the series is described by Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, as a “global phenomenon” valued for its blend of warmth and detective storytelling. The franchise’s success has also supported the development of spinoffs, including Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise.
Production Begins on New Thriller Wahala
Concurrently, filming has started for Wahala, a six-part thriller adapted for the screen by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko. The series is based on Nikki May’s debut novel and is produced by Firebird Pictures, a part of BBC Studios. The narrative focuses on four Nigerian-British women in their thirties residing in London, whose lives and friendships are disrupted by the arrival of a wealthy acquaintance and the emergence of dark secrets from their pasts.
The production features a high-profile female-led cast, including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma, who are joined by Nigerian screen icon Genevieve Nnaji. Directors for the series include Leonora Lonsdale, Theresa Ikoko, and Remi Weekes. Lindsay Salt characterized Ikoko’s scripts as “riveting” and praised the “magnificent calibre” of the cast.
Global Distribution and Commercial Impact
Both productions are expected to have a significant international presence, with BBC Studios managing global sales for both Death in Paradise and Wahala. These projects contribute to the broader output of BBC Studios, which produced nearly 3,300 hours of programming in the last year. As production progresses in Guadeloupe and London, further details regarding guest stars and specific broadcast dates are expected to be announced.
