The BBC has officially announced the recommissioning of the award-winning drama Death in Paradise for an additional two series and two Christmas specials. Filming for the new chapters has already commenced this week on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, the real-world home of the fictional Saint Marie.

Consistently ranked as one of the UK’s most-watched television programs, the show is produced by Red Planet Pictures and continues to be a cornerstone of BBC One and iPlayer. The upcoming Series 16 is expected to build on this momentum, with Executive Producer Tim Key teasing “something very special” and a “big surprise” set to be revealed in the next Christmas special.

Returning Cast and Production

Fans will see the return of several beloved characters to the sun-drenched shores of Saint Marie. The confirmed cast includes:

  • Don Gilet as DI Mervin Wilson
  • Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson
  • Shantol Jackson as DS Naomi Thomas
  • Shaquille Ali-Yebuah as Officer Sebastian Rose
  • Catherine Garton as Sergeant Mattie Fletcher
  • Élizabeth Bourgine as Catherine Bordey

Additional guest stars and specific case details are expected to be announced as production progresses.

A Global Phenomenon

Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, noted that the series has become a global phenomenon, praised for its unique blend of “humour, warmth and classic detective storytelling”. The show’s reach now extends to 230 territories worldwide.

The enduring popularity of the brand has also led to the creation of a successful franchise, including spinoffs Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise, both of which have drawn millions of viewers domestically and internationally. All episodes of the main series and its spinoffs remain available for streaming on BBC iPlayer.

The production continues to receive support from the region of Guadeloupe, with BBC Studios managing global sales. Series 16 will be executive produced by Tim Key, America Rodriguez, and Nick Lambon.
