Sony Pictures Doubles Down on Immersive Tech with $100M Cosm Investment

In a significant move to bridge the gap between traditional cinema and the next generation of fan engagement, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) announced a $100 million strategic investment in Cosm. As the lead investor in Cosm’s Series C financing round, Sony aims to leverage its massive library of intellectual property—spanning films, television, and games—within Cosm’s high-tech immersive venues.

Sony is bridging the gap between cinema and reality with a $100M bet on Cosm’s immersive technology.

What is Shared Reality?

Cosm is at the forefront of Shared Reality, a technology that bridges virtual and physical worlds. Unlike traditional VR that requires headsets, Cosm’s venues utilize specialized engineering and sensorial technology to create collective, immersive experiences for sports, entertainment, and art.

Ravi Ahuja, Chairman and CEO of SPE, noted that Cosm sits at the “intersection of several trends shaping the future of entertainment”. The goal is to use this technology to deepen audience engagement by allowing fans to step directly into the stories and worlds they love.

From Hollywood to Shared Reality: Sony Pictures deepens fan engagement through new tech-forward venue experiences.

Expanding the Physical Footprint

The capital infusion will be used to accelerate Cosm’s venue network and advance its technology initiatives. Currently, Cosm operates three major venues:

  • Inglewood, Los Angeles (Hollywood Park)
  • North Dallas (Grandscape)
  • Downtown Atlanta (Centennial Yards)

Expansion is already underway, with a fourth location scheduled to open in downtown Detroit this September, followed by a fifth in downtown Cleveland in early 2027. Sony’s involvement is expected to help take these experiences to additional domestic and international markets.

A Strategic Synergy

For Sony, the investment represents a commitment to experiential entertainment and “technology-forward experiences”. Cosm President and CEO Jeb Terry highlighted the synergy between the two companies, stating that Sony’s storied history in tech and content makes them the ideal partner to bring “iconic IP to life in Shared Reality”.

As the entertainment landscape shifts toward more interactive and physical experiences, this partnership positions Sony to “super serve” global fans through innovative venues that must be “felt to be believed”.
