Eurimages Cinema Triumphs at the 2026 Venice Film Festival

Golden Lion Victory for “Woman Unknown”

European cinema marked another landmark milestone at the 2026 Venice Film Festival as Kvinde ukendt (Woman Unknown) claimed the top prize, the Golden Lion. Directed by May el-Toukhy, who was notably the sole female director selected in the Official Competition, the co-production between Denmark, Latvia, and Sweden gained widespread acclaim on the Lido.

Adding to the film’s accolades, lead performer Mathilde Arcel received the Best Actress Award for her central role. Set in post-World War II Denmark, Woman Unknown unfolds across a tense three-day period following a young woman who attempts to escape a carefully suppressed secret and establish a new life for herself.

Orizzonti Grand Prize Awarded to “Diane in the Loop”

In the festival’s Orizzonti section, European co-productions continued their strong showing with the Grand Prize going to Un Detour Par Diane (Diane in the Loop). Directed by Raphaël Balboni and Ann Sirot, the Belgian and French co-production examines the complex dynamic between a young woman determined to avenge her mother’s rape and her mother, who seeks only to forget the past and move forward.
