The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that the 53rd Student Academy Awards (SAA) ceremony will take place at the TIFF Lightbox in Toronto on September 14, 2026. This event marks a collaborative effort between the Academy and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with continued support from Rolex.
Student winners will receive access to the festival’s market and educational panels designed to facilitate professional networking. Additionally, these filmmakers will have exclusive opportunities to connect with Academy members to help advance their careers. The partnership aims to provide a global platform for emerging talent as the film industry becomes increasingly international.
“These filmmakers are the future of our industry, and we are thrilled to platform their work at this important international festival,” — Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor.
The competition is open to both full-time and part-time students who have produced a film as part of their university coursework. Submissions are categorized into four areas: Alternative/Experimental, Animation, Documentary, and Live Action Narrative. Films must be submitted through the FilmFreeway platform for consideration.
“Championing the next generation of global storytellers is central to our mission… and we’re proud to celebrate this year’s student filmmakers” — Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer.
Winners of this year’s competition will be announced in August. Success in the Student Academy Awards provides a direct path to the 99th Oscars, as winning films become eligible for consideration in the Animated, Live Action, or Documentary Short Film categories. Historically, past student winners have gone on to earn 70 Oscar nominations and 15 awards.
