LONDON — BBC Children in Need has published its inaugural 2026 Impact Report, revealing that the charity supported 363,000 children and young people across the UK during the last grant year. The report details a massive £96.1 million investment across 1,600 projects, providing stability for children facing poverty, mental health issues, and social inequity.

Driven by its “Change for Children” framework, the charity focused on four core pillars: strengthening mental health, alleviating poverty, improving social equity, and supporting those facing family challenges. Central to this success is what the charity calls a “golden thread” of trusted relationships, where youth workers, mentors, and counselors help children build resilience and emotional wellbeing.

Measurable Success in Wellbeing

The impact of these funded projects has led to significant positive outcomes for the nation’s youth:

  • 124,000 children improved their emotional wellbeing.
  • 117,000 enjoyed stronger relationships.
  • 116,000 developed greater self-belief.
  • 40,000 reported feeling safer.

In a survey of over 1,500 participants, 98% of young people reported feeling happy in the settings they attend, citing a sense of belonging and fun as primary reasons.

Addressing the Mental Health and Poverty Crisis

With one in five children now experiencing a probable mental health condition, the charity invested £15.5 million into 333 mental health projects. This funding supported 119,000 children through counseling, creative therapies, and trauma-informed support.

Simultaneously, the charity addressed the needs of the four million children currently living in poverty. An investment of £20.6 million supported 172,500 children affected by deprivation, providing access to essential items and emergency support. Through its “Communities for Children” initiative, the charity is also working in ten UK locations to create long-term, place-based solutions to child poverty.

Promoting Equity and Supporting Families

BBC Children in Need dedicated £21.6 million to 441 projects focused on social equity, helping 200,000 children—including disabled children, young carers, and refugees—feel seen and valued. Additionally, £12.7 million was used to support 116,000 children facing family challenges such as bereavement or instability at home.

Empowering Youth Voices

The charity continues to place young people at the center of its operations. The Young Grantmakers initiative empowered youth to help award £940,000 in funding, while the Youth Leadership Programme provided opportunities for young people to lead change within their own communities.

As pressures on families continue to rise, BBC Children in Need remains committed to early intervention and strengthening communities to ensure every child has the chance to thrive.
