The Interstellar Flight of Kara Zor-El Begins on HBO Max

DC Studios’ highly anticipated feature film, Supergirl, is scheduled to make its exclusive global streaming debut on HBO Max on Thursday, September 10. This debut brings the legendary comic book hero into the living rooms of millions of streaming subscribers worldwide. Following its streaming launch, the film will make its linear broadcast premiere on HBO on Saturday, September 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Behind the camera, Supergirl is helmed by director Craig Gillespie and written by screenwriter Ana Nogueira. The project is produced by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are spearheading the creative direction of the entire franchise. The film is executive produced by Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo, and Lars P. Winther. The character of Supergirl is based on the original DC creations by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Reimagining Heroism: The Origin of Kara Zor-El

This cinematic entry explores the rich backstory and origins of the interplanetary nomad Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl. As the cousin of Kal-El (known globally as Superman), Kara brings a uniquely distinct personality and philosophy to her brand of heroism. She is characterized as headstrong, worldly-wise, and occasionally reckless, exuding a relatable style of justice that is entirely on her own terms.

The core narrative of the film unfolds when an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes close to home. This crisis forces Kara to reluctantly align with an unlikely companion. Together, the duo embarks on an epic, interstellar journey. Throughout their travels, they must navigate the delicate balance between a personal desire for vengeance and the pursuit of true justice, all while fighting to save the life of Kara’s beloved best friend, her dog Krypto. Ultimately, the movie demonstrates that doing the right thing can be exceptionally difficult, and heroism does not always have to be nice.

Streamlined Accessibility with American Sign Language

In an effort to make the film accessible to a wider audience, HBO Max is releasing an exclusive ASL version of Supergirl alongside the standard release on Thursday, September 10. The ASL interpretation is performed by Catalene Sacchetti, renowned for her work on “Songs in Sign Language,” and directed by Jonaz McMillan, who previously directed “The Pitt with ASL” Season One. This inclusion underscores a commitment to accessible entertainment for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences globally.

Elevating the HBO Max Streaming Library

The arrival of Supergirl further strengthens the premium content library of HBO Max. The platform continues to offer a premier movie selection featuring acclaimed titles from Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, Turner Classic Movies, A24, and Studio Ghibli. Subscribers can experience new cinematic blockbusters alongside award-winning favorites like “One Battle After Another” and “Sinners,” as well as popular horror franchises such as “It,” “The Conjuring,” and “Final Destination”.
