NEW YORK — Discovery Channel has announced the premiere of its first-ever international survival competition series, Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown, set to debut on Sunday, May 17 at 8 PM ET/PT. The groundbreaking series will feature 14 elite “All-Stars” from across the globe competing for national pride and a $200,000 cash prize, the largest ever awarded in the franchise’s history.
The competition will take place in Zululand, South Africa, where seven pairs representing their home countries will be pushed to their limits across three brutal ecosystems. Survivalists must navigate a scorching savannah inhabited by rhinos and leopards, humid marshlands ruled by hippos and crocodiles, and the violent, shark-teeming waters of the Indian Ocean. Over the course of the 40-day challenge, participants are provided with no food, no water, and no clothing.
In a major shift for the franchise, the series introduces an official scoring system. Teams will earn points by completing survival tasks and succeeding in head-to-head challenges. High-scoring teams will earn safety from elimination and unlock essential tools for food, water, and shelter. Conversely, the bottom two teams will be forced to face off in an elimination challenge to stay in the game. To ensure a pure test of skill, the competition forbids shared resources, trading, and sabotage.
The international roster includes both franchise legends and rising stars representing four nations:
- Australia: Ky Furneaux and Alexa Towersey
- Brazil: Rene Murad and Marina Fukushima
- Mexico: Pablo Melin and Fernanda Perez
- USA: Four teams including notable survivalists Matt Wright, Jeff Zausch, Gabby Balassone, and Dan Link
Produced by Lionsgate Alternative Television, the series aims to test primitive bushcraft skills and interpersonal resilience on a global stage. Viewers are encouraged to join the conversation online using the hashtag #NakedAndAfraid.
