Lionsgate Stakes Out Summer Release for John Rambo Origin Story

The 44-year-old action franchise is preparing for its next chapter as Lionsgate confirms that the prequel film, titled John Rambo, will open in theaters on June 4 next year. This marks a major expansion for the $819 million global franchise, shifting the focus to the character’s early years.

In a move that signals high confidence in the project, Sylvester Stallone has officially signed on as an executive producer. While Stallone has been the creative engine of the series since 1982—co-writing all five previous films and directing the 2008 installment—this project marks the first time he has served in a strictly producing capacity.

New Lead and Creative Team

Because the film serves as a prequel to the classic First Blood, the lead role has transitioned to Noah Centineo, who will portray the younger version of the elite soldier. The production is currently filming in Bangkok, Thailand, under the direction of Jalmari Helander, the filmmaker behind the action-thriller Sisu.

Adam Fogelson, Chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, emphasized that Stallone’s involvement was the “final, critical piece” for the production, noting that Stallone understands the character better than anyone else.

A Powerhouse Production

The film features a screenplay by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani and is a collaborative effort between Lionsgate, Millennium Media, AGBO, and Templeton Media. Stallone joins a veteran executive production team that includes Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmyk.

With worldwide distribution handled by Lionsgate, the June 4 release date positions the film as a major summer blockbuster for next year. The ensemble cast also includes Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White, and Tayme Thapthimthong.
