BUSAN, South Korea — The third edition of Creative Asia, co-hosted by Netflix and the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), convened more than 400 emerging filmmakers and screen industry professionals in Busan to address critical shifts in film production, artificial intelligence integration, and international content distribution.

The daylong initiative brought rising talents together with established directors, cinematographers, and production executives to examine how authentic Asian narratives are achieving global cultural impact without sacrificing local specificity.

Authentic Local Stories Driving Global Streaming

Opening the summit, BIFF Deputy Director Karen Park emphasized a structural transformation in how global audiences consume international cinema. In previous market models, international distribution often required creators to broaden or dilute narrative elements for cross-border appeal. However, digital streaming platforms have inverted that approach.

“You proved that the more local, authentic, and specific a story is, the more universally it resonates,” Park stated.

Minyoung Kim, Vice President of Content for APAC (excluding India) at Netflix, detailed the infrastructure supporting this creative ecosystem. Over the past decade, Netflix’s skills and talent development initiatives have reached more than 18,000 creative professionals across the Asia-Pacific region. Netflix has collaborated with more than 350 production companies and filmed projects across 650 cities and towns in Asia.

Masterclasses in Cinematic Craft and Location Selection

Distinguished creators shared technical methodologies during masterclass sessions:

  • Cinematography Aesthetics: Cinematographer Kim Ji-yong (Possible Love) explained his collaborative process with acclaimed director Lee Chang-dong. To achieve an effortless visual frame that mimics human perception, Kim utilized natural lighting, single-camera setups, and custom-designed sets built around solar angles.
  • Narrative Risk-Taking: Director Han Jun-hee (D.P., Weak Hero Class) discussed converting non-traditional themes into broad commercial successes. Han advocated for supporting debut directors and accepting creative risk, noting that playing safe in competitive markets presents a greater risk to narrative innovation.
  • Location Management: In a panel organized with the Asian Film Commissions Network (AFCNet), location strategists including Reiko Kunieda (Perfect Days), Sung Q Lee (Senior Director of APAC Production at Netflix), and Lauren Cooper (Location Managers Guild International) analyzed how physical settings function as active storytelling elements rather than passive backdrops.

Artificial Intelligence in Asian Film Production

Co-hosted with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and moderated by film critic Youn Sung-eun, a dedicated industry panel evaluated the practical applications of artificial intelligence in cinema production.

Director Kang Yun-sung reported that AI visual tools enabled his team on Run to the West to realize creative concepts previously sidelined by financial constraints. On his subsequent project, The Gulf of Aden, AI integration reduced overall production costs by 30% to 40% by streamlining shooting schedules and compressing post-production timelines.

Kimball Thurston, Chief Technology Officer at Wētā FX, highlighted how AI automates repetitive technical tasks, allowing digital artists greater opportunity to iterate and refine complex visual sequences. However, panel participants agreed on clear boundaries regarding emotional resonance.

“When we talk about human-centric, it is not about substituting creativity, but ultimately it is about supporting the creative,” noted Sung Q Lee.

Distribution Horizons for Independent Cinema

Addressing small and mid-budget filmmaking in South Korea, BIFF programmer Jeong Jihye led discussions with directors Namkoong Sun (Love Untangled) and Son Gwang-min (My Aunt). The directors observed that global streaming platforms offer independent titles immediate worldwide accessibility, extending the visibility of festival selections beyond short theatrical runs.

Complementing the panel discussions, Creative Asia introduced hands-on educational workshops led by Netflix content executives Keo Lee and Christopher Mack, offering emerging talents insights into greenlight decision parameters and pilot episode structure. A closed-door Creative Economy Exchange also connected regional policymakers with creative alumni to discuss regulatory frameworks, local job creation, and screen tourism across Asian markets.
