Universal Pictures’ Fifty Shades of Grey, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, earned $239.7 million in its opening weekend at the worldwide box office.

Rentrak, which measures the box office performance of movies, announced Sunday the worldwide weekend box office estimates for the weekend of Feb. 15, 2015, as compiled by the company’s theatrical measurement services.

Fifty Shades of Grey is produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti alongside E L James. The screenplay for the film is by Kelly Marcel.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a film adaptation of a bestselling book. Since its release, the “Fifty Shades” trilogy has been translated into 51 languages worldwide and sold more than 100 million copies in e-book and print—making it one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever.

“Universal’s erotic drama ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ felt the love from audiences as it earned a whopping $239.7 million around the globe this weekend,” said Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

An online Canadian sex toy retailer, PinkCherry, observed huge spike in sales and interest in sex toys after the launch of Fifty Shades of Grey film trailer.

According to Rentrak, the top 12 worldwide weekend box office estimates, listed in descending order, per data collected as of Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, are below.

3. Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out Of Water- Paramount Pictures – $44.0M
